Busy exhibition hall with visitors walking between stands

Five tips for a stand-out exhibition stand

Trade shows and exhibitions are still one of the best ways to meet potential customers face to face. They’re also a significant investment in stand space, travel, staff time and materials. With dozens or even hundreds of exhibitors competing for attention, your stand has about three seconds to make someone stop. Here’s how to make those seconds count.

1. Say what you do in five words or fewer

Visitors walk the aisles scanning, not reading. Your main graphic needs a short, bold statement that tells people instantly what you offer and why they should care. “Commercial roofing across the South East” beats a clever slogan nobody understands at a glance. Save the detail for leaflets and conversations.

2. Design for height and distance

The most important information should sit at eye level and above, so it’s visible over the heads of crowds and from further down the aisle. Your logo and headline belong at the top of the stand, not the bottom, where tables, people and literature racks will hide them. Text needs to be readable from several metres away, so think large type, strong contrast and plenty of space.

3. Keep the visuals simple and on-brand

It’s tempting to fill every inch with photos, bullet points and logos of accreditations. Resist. One strong image and a clear message will outperform a cluttered collage every time. Stick to your brand colours and fonts so the stand feels like a natural extension of your website, vehicles and literature. Visitors who remember you later should recognise you instantly.

4. Use light and movement wisely

Exhibition halls are often dim and uneven. Backlit fabric displays and well-placed spotlights make graphics glow and draw the eye from across the hall. A screen showing a short looping video or product demo can add movement, but keep it secondary to the main graphic and make sure it works without sound.

5. Plan the whole visitor journey, not just the backdrop

The stand gets attention; everything else turns it into business. Think about:

  • Literature: a concise brochure or leaflet people can take away.
  • Business cards and QR codes: an easy way to follow up, linking to a dedicated landing page.
  • Giveaways: branded items people will actually use and keep.
  • Pop-up banners and counters: to frame the space and give staff somewhere to work.
  • Follow-up materials: emails and mailers designed in the same style, so the connection continues after the show.

A bonus tip: choose modular, reusable hardware where you can. A good frame system can be refreshed with new graphics for each event, which saves money and reduces waste.

Get the details right before the show

Exhibition graphics have tight technical requirements around bleed, resolution and panel joins, and organisers have firm deadlines. We design stands with production in mind from day one and work back from your show date to make sure everything arrives on time and fits perfectly.
